The trend toward downsizing in gasoline and diesel engines will continue. It will demand particular characteristics of the turbocharging system:

• spontaneous responsiveness
• wide operating maps and large ranges of control over a large mass flow range
• increased charge pressure ratios
• low thermal inertia, i.e., low heat loss from the exhaust gas flow
  (catalytic converter light-off)
• long service life, even under demanding operating conditions
• improved acoustic behavior
